URGENT: Florida Releases Infant Formula Test Results Under Healthy Florida First

Parents want nothing more than safe, nourishing options for their babies. That’s why many families across Florida are paying close attention to a recent announcement from state leaders regarding infant formula testing.

What Was Announced

In Bartow, Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis, First Lady Casey DeSantis, and Florida Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo announced the release of new infant formula testing results conducted by the Florida Department of Health.

According to the announcement, 24 infant formula products commonly available in Florida were tested, and 16 were found to contain elevated levels of certain heavy metals, including mercury. State leaders said these findings raise concerns about possible issues in ingredient sourcing or manufacturing practices.

Governor DeSantis emphasized that the testing was part of Florida’s broader effort to increase transparency, accountability, and consumer choice, particularly for families with infants who are most vulnerable to environmental exposures.

What This Means for Families

Heavy metals such as mercury, lead, arsenic, and cadmium can occur naturally in the environment. Trace exposure can happen through soil, water, and food production. However, infants are especially sensitive, which is why even small amounts can be concerning and deserve careful monitoring.

State officials stressed that the testing results are meant to:

  • Inform families, not alarm them

  • Encourage higher safety standards across the industry

  • Push for accountability and improvements in manufacturing and sourcing

Expanded Options for WIC Families

As part of Florida’s Healthy Florida First Initiative, the state announced it is working with federal partners to expand infant formula options for families enrolled in WIC (Women, Infants, and Children). This change would allow families greater flexibility to switch formulas if they have concerns based on the testing results.

What Parents Can Do Now

In light of Florida’s infant formula testing results, we want to be very clear and proactive in our guidance. Parents deserve the ability to make informed choices, and babies deserve the safest possible nutrition.

1. Consider Switching Formulas

If your baby is currently on formula, we encourage parents to explore alternative formula options, especially products not identified in the testing results or those with more transparent sourcing and manufacturing practices.

2. Explore Donor Breast Milk (When Appropriate)

For some families, screened donor breast milk from an accredited milk bank may be an option—particularly for infants with medical needs or heightened vulnerability. Your pediatrician can help determine whether this is appropriate and guide you to reputable sources.

3. Monitor for Possible Heavy Metal Exposure

Heavy metals can affect the developing brain and nervous system. While symptoms may not be obvious, parents should contact their pediatrician if they notice:

  • Feeding difficulties

  • Poor growth or weight gain

  • Developmental delays

  • Excessive irritability or lethargy

4. Ask About Blood Work if You’re Concerned

If you believe your baby may have been exposed to heavy metals—especially with prolonged use of a potentially affected formula—speak with your us about blood testing. In certain cases, screening for heavy metals may be appropriate based on exposure history and clinical findings.
